Fleming made a proposal 121 years ago today&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 from Wikipedia.org:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After missing a train in 1876 in <a title=\"Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\">Ireland<\/a> because its printed schedule listed p.m. instead of a.m., he proposed a  single 24-hour clock for the entire world, located at the centre of the  Earth and <em>not<\/em> linked to any surface meridian.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandford_Fleming#cite_note-1\"><span>[<\/span>2<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> At a meeting of the Royal Canadian Institute on February 8, 1879 he  linked it to the anti-meridian of <a title=\"Royal Observatory, Greenwich\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Observatory,_Greenwich\">Greenwich<\/a> (now 0\u00b0). He  suggested that standard <a title=\"Time zone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_zone\">time zones<\/a> could be used locally, but they were  subordinate to his single world time. He continued to promote his system  at major international conferences, including the <a title=\"International Meridian Conference\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Meridian_Conference\">International Meridian  Conference<\/a> of 1884. That conference accepted a different version of <a title=\"Universal  Time\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universal_Time\">Universal Time<\/a>, but refused to accept his zones, stating that  they were a local issue outside its purview.
